Reflection on Realities
Within this body of work, I have explored various means of escapisms as a coping mechanism for unbearable circumstances. My main focus being on video games, books and choice based/ visual novel games. I have a deep interest in the virtual world and how we reflect the things we’ve learnt from these virtual escapisms back into our reality and vice versa. I am interested in the effects, good or bad from these reflections and what we can do to improve our given realities from it.
In video games we have choices to be whoever we want to be. In reality we do not choose our circumstances, appearances, illnesses and so forth. Creating ‘imaginary’ friends had always been a coping mechanism for me- especially from loneliness-from a young age. Many of these imaginary friends had later became different versions of myself. Some were even created while I was in school and were often based on confident and heroic video game characters. I had decided to branch out my characters into a fully fleshed world and started to look at each avatar for advice to advance into my own life rather than my imagined reality of The Elemental Isles.
The journey of the lands, temptation of the shop and the ever-observing Binkie-the sleep demon are all part of the reflection my reality. Being sent back home from university residence due to the Corona virus, birthed a character- my Nega self, The Bat Queen which arose from many stressors. I drew inspiration from my other avatars, who are past, present and future versions of myself to help me defeat a version of myself I did not want to become this year. This is an on- going process but has changed the way I look at life already. My intention is to bring awareness to what we can change in our reality rather than letting the stress of what we cannot change take over.
