A Broken Heal
If you find a shell
That fits over your ear
What do you hear?
The sea
how strange it is to be anything at all.
from where you are standing
What do you see?
Say what you see in the dark
To say what I see in the dark
“All the new thinking is about loss. In this it resembles the old thinking” (Hass, 1979).
The world is ending (it has been for a long time). However, we are at a point in history where it seems Earth has tilted on its axis and is spinning off kilter. Does the world seem upside down to you? We are preoccupied with the sorrows and joys of a little life and a certain death, but the relationship between the external environment and our internal landscape is both a window and a mirror. We remember our mortality and forget it just as rapidly. All the while, there is another face to the tragedy, turmoil, and chaos: “the logic of loss is also about renewal” (Robert Hass). There are miracles abounding within the mundane.
I am collecting objects, images, and encounters alike as a means of taking note. I am painting to bear witness.
