Matter: Feel and Felt.

The matter that makes the world relies on nothing except their own state in nature and the ability of a person to communicate with it. Material and materiality speak with each other as we speak with matter. We cannot discount being a part of that world, whilst being and interacting with material. The materials I use respond to pressure. Shifting with instructions, absorbing suggestions to become the result of external will. Evolving into strength or sickness, beauty or grotesqueness, symmetry or distortion – under pressure of the self-imposed or external.

The act of being is through change, we change and adapt and learn, much like the environment around us. Using wood and clay interchangeably results in thinking about how they fit together, how materials interact with one another to make something new. My forms are creatures, people, identities in flux. Growing into being as I resist and accept their grasp on me. Filing away at my hands as a vessel, a vase and a stand becomes in front of me. They embody transformation shaped by gaze and influence. Their eyes stretch outward seeking and adapting. They influence us as we interact and play with them.

This material thought offers us a way to view and understand the world and our relationships within it. The shaping of vessels, carving into wood, rusted metal and calcified bones all respond to a world changing, dying and clinging to life as a new form. Unfinished; Nurtured; Neglected; Stateless.
