In this lecture, Carine Zaayman, lecturer and PhD candidate at the Michaelis School of Fine Art will discuss her solo exhibition entitled ‘Remnants and Ancestors: Anarchives of Krotoa and Anne Barnard’, held at the Castle of Good Hope in November and December 2012. The exhibition concerns Zaayman’s research into the histories and legacies of Krotoa and Anne Barnard. Zaayman reflects on the ways in which these two women have featured in significant ways in contemporary representations of South Africa’s colonial past, as well as the provocative strategies that can be employed in the field of visual art to challenge and reimagine these representations. She will explore her own notion of the ‘Anarchive’ in relation to these issues.

Carine Zaayman is Lecturer in New Media at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. A practicing artist, she graduated from the University in sculpture, then went on to do a Masters at Wits. Zaayman starting teaching part time at various places and was employed by Unisa for a year. Then she got a job at Michaelis in 2003, where she has been happily teaching ever since. Zaayman did a fair amount of art criticism initially, for the likes of Artthrob and Art South Africa, but then decided to focus fully on creative work, also enrolling for a PhD at Michaelis. Zaayman has been part of the Archive and Public Culture Initiative at UCT since its inception, and is now also a convenor in the Curatorship Honours Programme for the ‘Curating Colonial Connections’. This was my second solo show.
