Michaelis Galleries is proud to present Land/Home, an exhibition showcasing new work by Jean Brundrit, Sarah Ciurysek and Nina Mangalanayagam, produced in association with Radar, Loughborough University’s contemporary arts programme. The South African leg of this international show, first exhibited in 2012 under the title Home/Land in locations around Loughborough, takes its cue from ongoing critical engagement with constructions of gender, identity, citizenship and belonging in women’s photographic practices.

Rather than attempt to assimilate such diverse concerns into a single narrative, this select group of artists uses the show as a platform to create distinct works that speak to subjective interpretations of place. As such, Land/Home is less a formal photographic endeavour than an exploration of the potential of both medium and subject.

South African artist Jean Brundrit’s contribution, At Sea, abandons the camera in favour of a 3D laser scanner- a tool traditionally used for mapping the physical environment- to record the swells of waves off the coast of Cape Town. In surveying inherently unmappeable ocean topographies, At Sea interrogates the futility of the colonial project. Its unstable and ephemeral nature presents a visual metaphor for South Africa’s own relationship to boundaries, expansion and empire.

Also drawing on the language of cartography, Nina Mangalanayagam, a Swedish photographic artist based in London, presents the multi-media installation Balancing Act. The dual screen video component traces the demarcations of sports courts in a disorienting close up, as traversed by female feet. Accompanied by sound and text that both allude to the artist’s own migratory history, the work is an immersive reflection on the fluidity and unfixed nature of borders and identities.

Sarah Ciurysek’s Dear Mary is the result of the Canadian artist’s residency in Loughborough, in which a chance encounter with an elderly local, Mary, inspired a ‘sonic photograph’ of the generational and cultural differences between the two women. By paying homage to Mary’s independence and self-determination, Ciurysek invites her audience to share in her poignant musing on human connection.
