Lunchtime Lecture: Kurt Campbell and Premesh Lalu
Kurt Campbell and Premesh Lalu will present a Lunchtime Lecture centred on their collaborative exhibition, ‘Holding a Thought’, on Wednesday, 20 August, 1-2pm.
This exhibition pays tribute to the work of a collective of artists, the Ukwanda Puppetry and Design Art Collective, that have both offered pathways for a post-apartheid desire to flourish and also challenged the institutional site of the university to consider the meaning of an aesthetic education in the wake of apartheid. In convening this exhibition through a collaboration between the University of Cape Town and the University of the Western Cape, we wish to stress the importance of enabling a cross-fertilisation between public arts and university discourse. We dedicate this exhibition to the memory of Ncedile Daki, a founding member of Ukwanda who was tragically killed in a wanton act of violence in February 2017. Daki’s tragic death serves as a reminder of the precarity of everyday life under which many artists continue to work and give shape to the meaning of a post-apartheid South Africa.
