Mitchell Gilbert Messina (b.1991) is an artist from Cape Town, South Africa. He works across mediums with a current research interest in moving image, DIY electronics, and interactivity. His art practice is largely reliant on knocking things together until they sometimes make meaning.

He co-runs Under Projects, an independent non-commercial art space, with three other artists (Luca Evans, Brett Seiler and Guy Simpson) and co-runs Afterimage, a local screening programme where invited artists share their work alongside selected reference material that informed it, with Ben Albertyn.

Messina’s previous solo exhibitions include A bouncing ball, Breakroom (2025), Sure Thing!, blank project (2019), The Fluxus Commune, Open24 (2019), Go Away Mitchell, Stevenson (2017) and Nobody Will Suspect a Thing, Whatiftheworld (2015). His work has also been included in group shows, including The Main Complaint, Zeitz MOCAA (2018), To see this story better, close your eyes, Reid Gallery, Glasgow (2018), Shady Tactics, SMAC, Cape Town (2018), X-Show, Institut Kunst, Basel (2017), Sex, Stevenson, Johannesburg (2016), and Filter Bubble curated by Simon Castets and Hans Ulrich Obrist, Luma Foundation, Zurich (2015).
