‘What Happens In The Dark’ marks 30 years since the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission and situates it within a longer and ongoing struggle over truth-making in South Africa. Before democracy, truth circulated through clandestine networks, exile archives, protest art, and embodied memory. After democracy, truth has been institutionalised in commissions, reports, and hearings, yet it continues to be contested in courtrooms, on streets, and within families. The exhibition questions how the authority to define truth has shifted, but never settled and draws on archival material, film and photography.
