Celebrating Women Composers

Join us for a captivating lunchtime concert featuring visting flutist Martha Councell-Vargas and pianist Ann DuHamel. This free event showcases a compelling programme of music composed exclusively by women, including Clara Schumann, Mel Bonis, Lili Boulanger, Hedwige Chrétien, Augusta Holmès, Avril Coleridge-Taylor and Claude Arrieu.

Flutist Martha Councell-Vargas, Professor of Flute at the Irving S. Gilmore School of Music, Western Michigan University, has performed across five continents and is widely recognised for her adventurous, multimedia-driven performances and dedication to decolonizing the classical flute repertoire. Her work celebrates voices historically under-represented in classical music, with a particular focus on Latin American and Caribbean composers.

Pianist Ann DuHamel, Associate Professor of Music, University of Minnesota Morris, is known for her poetic artistry and commitment to socially conscious programming. Her recent projects, including Prayers for a Feverish Planet, explore the intersection of art and environmental advocacy, earning her recognition as a forward-thinking classical musician.

This recital offers audiences a rare opportunity to hear two dynamic and thoughtful artists present music that is both beautiful and historically significant.
