My exploration of commemoration and redemption through the phenomenon of lesser monuments* has manifest as four interconnected, yet distinct, theoretical and practical discourses, across diverse mediums.
*Monuments - a collective noun for memorials, statues, headstones, tombstones, cairns, etc.
Chapter 1 Written in Stone - Drawings
An outpouring of large charcoal drawings, and the reworking thereof, in search of a “loci”, or iconic stimuli. Securing an authentic expression that bonded me with the subject matter and provided a foundation from which to work.
Chapter 2 Pop-Up Monument & Pop-In Monument - Mixed Media Installation
The result of finding authentic imagery from which to work. Exploring this idea further in a quest to translate drawings into interactive (installation) sculptural work. Connecting the past to the present; the future to the past.
Chapter 3 Alveoli - Monuments to a Lesser Self - Photography
A subdivision of the theme - a need to reinvent and capture the drawings from Chapter 1, while capitalising on the objecthood of Chapter 2, through the medium of Photography. The careful theatrical reconstruction of curated items towards highly choreographed and stylised memorials within an undefined landscape.
Chapter 4 Concrete Halos - Drawings, Photography and Installation
Rapturous redemption and rebirth, not only in the interrogation of the subject matter, but in the actual application of art techniques and disciplines. Photographic expressions of coded texts placed on the ground, in discussion with coded texts drawn on paper, and interactive site - specific sculptural installations.
