How do disillusioned voters choose among political outsiders?

Dr. Robert Nyenhuis, assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at Cal Poly Pomona, gave the Institute seminar on Tuesday August 7th. Dr Nyenhuis presented his research on voting behavior in the 2016 Beninese presidential election. The work relies on Afrobarometer data from the survey conducted in Benin in March 2017 to test economic theories, government performance hypotheses, and theories of political culture, using multinomial regression models to investigate the reasons for how voters made their decisions to select between the former Prime Minister yet political novice Lionel Zinsou, and the two outsider and independent candidates—Patrice Talon and Sébastien Ajavou.
