The first edition was published in 1983, dedicated to 'the hope that within the near future Apartheid will be merely a subject for historians to study'. The second edition appeared in 2000. The new, third edition, co-authored with Peter Limb (a specialist on the early history of the ANC and a leading bibliographer) takes the South African story to the arrival of Covid-19 in 2020. Its almost 600 pages include a chronology, introduction, and extensive bibliography. The more than 600 cross-referenced entries concern important personalities, from Abdurahman to Zuma, and aspects of the country's politics, society, economy, and foreign relations.
