Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa takes up appointment at Stellenbosch
Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa took up an appointment as Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at Stellenbosch in July. Sishuwa had been a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in the Institute since 2019. During his time at UCT he established himself as a leading scholar of the recent political history of Zambia and a brave (and often controversial) public commentator on Zambian politics. In addition to numerous journal articles, Sishuwa completed his biography of Michael Sata, who was Zambian president between 2011 and his death in 2014.

SISHUWA SISHUWA is an Honorary Research Associate in the Institute for Democracy, Citizenship and Public Policy in Africa (IDCPPA) at the University of Cape Town and a Senior Lecturer in History at Stellenbosch University. Previously, Sishuwa was a lecturer in history at the University of Zambia.
He works on southern Africa’s political history during the twentieth century and his scholarship emphasises a historical approach to understanding contemporary issues. His research on ethnicity, democracy, elections, civil society, populism, and racial nationalism has been published in major African studies journals. These include African Affairs, African Studies Review, Canadian Journal of African Studies, Journal of Eastern African Studies, Journal of Southern African Studies, and Journal of Modern African Studies. His first book, Party Politics and Populism in Zambia, will be published by James Currey during the first half of 2024.
As well as serving on the editorial boards of the Journal of African History, Journal of Southern African Studies, and the South African Historical Journal, Sishuwa regularly contributes to the print and broadcast media on African politics. He holds a PhD in Modern History from the University of Oxford.
