Visiting scholar Marsha Meskimmon

Marsha Meskimmon will be visiting Michaelis from the 18th to the 26th August as a Visiting Scholar. Michaelis was awarded a grant from the Visiting Scholars Fund, the purpose of which is to bring to UCT eminent academics from outside South Africa.

Meskimmon is Professor of Art History and Theory at Loughborough University (UK). Meskimmon’s research focuses on transnational contemporary art, with a particular emphasis on women’s practice, feminist corporeal-materialisms, and the politics of home in a global world. Her publications include: The Art of Reflection: Women Artists’ Self-Portraiture in the Twentieth Century (1996), We Weren’t Modern Enough: Women Artists and the Limits of GermanModernism (1999),Women Making Art: History, Subjectivity, Aesthetics (2003) andContemporary Art and the Cosmopolitan Imagination (2010). Women, the Arts and Globalisation: Eccentric Experience (co-edited with Dorothy Rowe), was published in 2013 and with Phil Sawdon, she has just completed the book Drawing Difference: Connections between Gender and Drawing (since the 1960s). With Amelia Jones, she edits the series Rethinking Art’s Histories for Manchester University Press.

She will be taking part in activities at the school, giving undergraduate lectures, attending studio critiques, contributing to postgraduate seminars and interacting with MA students. She will also be giving two public lectures: a Lunch Time Lecture on Wednesday 19 at 13:00 in the Commerce Lecture Theatre entitled Making yourself at home in the world: feminism, citizenship and the arts and a lecture entitled WACK! and Beyond: the contingent constant of feminist interventions in curating and as part of the CCA’s Speaker Series on Thursday 20 at 16:30 in the Anatomy Lecture Theatre.
