2021 Portfolio Development Workshop Opportunity
A preparatory program for historically disadvantaged applicants who wish to study Fine Art or Architecture at UCT
This two-semester workshop offered by the Creative Social Ethics program in collaboration with the UCT Michaelis School of Fine Art, is designed to improve and enhance applicants’ technical and conceptual skills, thus better preparing them for university studies. Classes will be held in person at Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT Hiddingh Campus, 31-37 Orange Street, Cape Town) Mondays and Thursdays from April 8 through July 1, and August 2 through October 7 (class times TBA). Participants will have access to facilities and resources that the school offers, and all materials will be supplied for assignments and projects.
The objective of this program is to assist participants to prepare and submit a compelling application for admission to UCT at the conclusion of the program. Please note, participation in the program does not guarantee admission to UCT but will provide participants with the requisite skills to complete the application and portfolio required for admission.
Semester one will focus on technical and conceptual development in a variety of creative media (drawing, sculpture, mixed media, etc.) with an emphasis on the exploration of self, family, community, and the environment. Semester two will be largely self-directed and will focus on portfolio development targeted to the participant’s chosen degree. This will be augmented with theoretical groundings (readings, lectures, and class discussions) along with exercises designed to help potential applicants write about themselves with respect to their chosen creative practice.
A limited number of spaces are available. If you are interested in participating in the workshop, you are encouraged to apply by sending a short letter of motivation with the Subject: “Portfolio Development” to admissions.fineart@uct.ac.za. This program is fully funded by an external donor with support from the Michaelis School of Fine Art with no cost to participants.
