Over the Horizon by Jean Brundrit book launch
On 3 November, Michaelis associate professor in photography, Jean Brundrit launched her new book, Over the Horizon (2022). This book was published by the Antarctic Legacy Trust. The Antarctic Legacy of South Africa (ALSA) project aims to preserve the rich human history of Antarctic expeditions and South Africa’s presence in the Southern Ocean over the last 70 years.
Jean’s book was launched in the garden of the Irma Stern museum in Rondebosch. A small exhibition of some prints was on display and Jean was available for book signing.
Jean’s book of photographs is a product of an expedition to Antarctica in 2019/20 aboard the SA Agulhas II. On this research vessel Jean photographed with an ice lens. The resultant pictures are atmospheric, impressionistic and dreamlike and speak to the current environmental crisis. Between these deliberately out of focus photographs, taken with the ice lens, are crisp lens based photographs. The images in the book are of the continental ice shelf, the sea ice, ice bergs and the sea and are in black and white and colour. The book is an artistic response to the Antarctic with view to preserving this extraordinary continent.
