Congratulations to Yusra Fakier for being awarded the Tierney fellowship which runs from July 2025 to May 2026. This prestigious fellowship was established in 2003 and support and mentor emerging photographers. In South Africa the Tierney fellows are located at Market Photo Workshops, Wits School of Art and the Michaelis School of Art. She will be mentored by Associate Professors Svea Josephy and Jean Brundrit.

Yusra’s project focusses on her homes: the first an intergenerational home in the Bo-Kaap which has been lived in by her family for generations; the second her new home in Lansdowne. In these photographs we see familiarity, family members, worn and new objects and the domestic life of two families that have been molded by the conditions of life in South Africa during apartheid and post-apartheid. These images are finding form in a photobook which also contains archival material.

Yusra will attend workshops in Johannesburg and Cape Town with leading artists, photographers and thinkers. On completion of her fellowship she will remain a fellow and will continue to mentor the Tierney fellows going forward.
