About the Seminar:
Teen Advisory Group (TAG): Turning the page from one chapter to another
The Eastern Cape Teen Advisory Group (TAG) has played a critical role in contributing to the Adolescent Accelerators Research Hub’s insight into adolescent health and well-being. The aim of TAG is to (1) co-generate empirical data; (2) build methods “co-laboratories”, where participatory and arts-based methods are developed and tested in partnership with AYP; and, most importantly, (3) shift power during the research process. Recruited initially as adolescents in the Eastern Cape, this young group of research advisors have contributed to research co-design, co-authored publications and co-created national policy and informed policy implementation with the South African government. Since 2022, this research team has supported TAG to shape their research engagement journey, including the process of ethical closure and “graduation”, which began at the start of 2023. In our final gathering of 2022, the TAGers expressed interest in developing their own research focus and transitioning into more prominent leadership roles in the facilitation of adult-youth participatory research engagements. In late 2022, we were invited by Caroline Lenette, an Australian scholar specialising in participatory research methods, to write a book chapter on how to engage with young people in research from a South African perspective. We are currently in the process of collaboratively writing this chapter with TAG on our individual and collective experiences of being part of TAG.
