Assisted partner notification for HIV: a qualitative study in Cape Town, South Africa

Assisted partner notification (APN) holds promise as a valuable contact tracing tool that could potentially enhance HIV testing and counselling services within the South African context. Yet the evidence supporting its use and effectiveness primarily comes from experiences in other countries, although it is widely recognised that the approach requires very specific, tailored implementation.

In this talk, Shehani Perera discusses findings from her doctoral research which explored perspectives and experiences of APN among healthcare workers and female patients in Cape Town, South Africa. The study aimed to understand how the process unfolds and which factors potentially influence it to offer better support for healthcare workers, patients, and partners of patients in the

Speakers

Shehani Perera is a public health researcher and social worker who has recently completed her DPhil in Public Health at the University of Cape Town. Her doctoral research explored APN as a tool that could potentially improve HIV testing and counselling services in Cape Town. Her research interests include HIV/AIDS; sexual and reproductive health and rights; mental health; the influence of gender and religion on health and the involvement of faith-based organisations in healthcare.
