The Centre for Social Sciences Research (CSSR) and the  Institute for Democracy, Citizenship and Public Policy in Africa  (IDCPPA) at the University of Cape Town invite you to join us for a lunchtime seminar on 26 February 2024 at 12:45pm. The seminar will be presented by Prof Harsha Thirumurthy.

About the Seminar:

Applications of economics and behavioural science to HIV prevention and treatment

Biomedical advances have been a game changer in the global response to the HIV epidemic in the past two decades. Yet progress in reducing new HIV infections hinges not only on the successful scale-up and delivery of biomedical interventions but also on behavioural and structural factors that are equally important to address.

Based on research from multiple countries, this seminar will review research that has applied insights from economics and other behavioural sciences to HIV prevention and treatment. The seminar will discuss policy implications of the existing evidence base as well as priorities for future research.

Speakers

Prof Harsha Thirumurthy is an economist and Professor in the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. His research interests are at the intersection of economics and public health, with a focus on identifying behavioral interventions to improve health outcomes in resource-limited settings and examining the effects of health and economic policies on population health outcomes.
