About the Seminar:
Using evidence to prevent school-based violence in the Western Cape – the Shukuma: Moving Mindsets programme
Shukuma is a Western Cape Government school-based, violence prevention initiative. Drawing on international evidence, the programme consists of group-based Cognitive-Behavioural sessions that facilitate Grade 8 learners through the process of creating life-long coping mechanisms by practicing social-cognitive skills and slowing down their automatic responses. Developed with research partners J-PAL Africa at the UCT School of Economics, the programme has been tested, piloted and monitored over the last 3 years. The seminar will share these findings and present an opportunity for discussion on the learning agenda going forward.
Speakers:
Ruth Capon is the Assistant Director at the Department of the Premier, She is a University of Cape Town Masters graduate with experience in research and the public sector. Her areas of interest include violence prevention, youth and education.
