The Centre for Social Sciences Research (CSSR) and the  Institute for Democracy, Citizenship and Public Policy in Africa  (IDCPPA) at the University of Cape Town invites you to join us for a lunchtime seminar on 12 September 2023 presented by Ruth Capon at 12:45pm.

About the Seminar:

Using evidence to prevent school-based violence in the Western Cape – the Shukuma: Moving Mindsets programme

Shukuma is a Western Cape Government school-based, violence prevention initiative. Drawing on international evidence, the programme consists of group-based Cognitive-Behavioural sessions that facilitate Grade 8 learners through the process of creating life-long coping mechanisms by practicing social-cognitive skills and slowing down their automatic responses. Developed with research partners J-PAL Africa at the UCT School of Economics, the programme has been tested, piloted and monitored over the last 3 years. The seminar will share these findings and present an opportunity for discussion on the learning agenda going forward.

Ruth Capon is the Assistant Director at the Department of the Premier, She is a University of Cape Town Masters graduate with experience in research and the public sector. Her areas of interest include violence prevention, youth and education.
