Afrows: Words of Subversion

Nearly 100 people packed UCT's Centre for African Studies Gallery on October 30th for the launch of Afrows: Words of Subversion – a provocative collection of protest poetry and prose by five UCT undergraduate English majors. The writers, who hail from Gugulethu, Jo'burg, Limpopo and Midrand, performed select texts from the Afrows anthology, including poems that confront endemic violence against women, racism, homophobia and government corruption. As one of the students, 21-year-old Tshepiso Mashinini, said before reciting a poem about the parallels between the pillage of women and of the environment: "Protest comes in many forms."
