  • Where is the Department of English Language and Literature?

  • Should I contact this department for English short courses?

    No, you should contact the UCT English Language Centre, which is located on Hiddingh Campus.

  • Does the Department offer creative writing courses?

    There are limited opportunities for creative writing throughout our undergraduate and postgraduate courses. However, for UCT’s designated Masters programme in Creative Writing, please contact the Centre for Creating Writing, which is housed in the School of Languages and Literature.

  • Does the Department offer journalism courses?

    No, journalism courses are offered by the Centre for Film and Media Studies.

  • Does the Department offer writing and/or editing services?

    No. Please contact the Writing Centre for help with writing and editing. Information about editing and proofreading services offered by freelance professionals who are not affiliated with the Department is, however, often posted on bulletin boards in AC Jordan.

Undergraduate

  • I’m an EDU or Extended Degree student. Must I be registered for both ELL1013F and ELL1009F (first year) or ELL2000F and ELL2016F (second year)?

    Yes, you must register for both courses. The same also applies for the second semester. If you think you qualify for an exemption, however, please contact the Department’s EDU Teaching Assistant.

  • I’m registered for a course: it shows on my PeopleSoft account, but Vula doesn’t show me as registered. What should I do?

    Wait until the week before lectures start. Further information will be given in introductory lectures.

  • I’ve signed up for a tutorial on Vula but my PeopleSoft account shows that I am signed up for a tutorial at a different time. Which is the correct tutorial to attend?

    The tutorial that you have signed up for on Vula is the correct one to attend. The PeopleSoft tutorial slot is merely a placeholder that indicates how many tutorials you have to attend for your English course.

  • Are there separate lectures for the English Plus tutorial courses?

    No.

  • Where can I find contact details for my tutor or other staff members?

    These details will be available on Vula on your course page under the ‘Participants’ tab.

  • Where can I find out about funding for undergraduates? 

    Undergraduate funding details can be found on the students fees and funding page.

  • Where can I buy copies of the set works?

    You can find copies of set texts at the UCT Campus Store, Protea Books, and other bookshops around the city. Students often sell second-hand copies of books from previous years – keep an eye out for posters at the start of the semester. Additionally, many out-of-copyright texts are available online, and some material will also be provided in your course reader.

  • Where can I find the reading list for next year?

    Set texts change from year to year, so please check the most up to date information on the website under course information before purchasing books, and make sure that the reading list is the current one (the year will be stipulated).

  • I’m really struggling with my course. Who can I contact for support?

    If you have applied for funding and have not heard about the outcome of your application, you may wish to contact the Postgraduate Funding Office. You can email the office at pgfunding@uct.ac.za.
