Michaelis alumni exhibit at NIROX Open Laboratory #2 'Good Neighbours'
Over the weekend of 7-8 May, the NIROX Foundation opened Good Neighbours, an exhibition that extends its partnership with local universities to public and private institutions across South Africa, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Mozambique, Namibia, Angola, and Botswana to co-develop and present an evolving programme of exhibitions, residencies, workshops, talks, and a concert.
âFollowing the successful inaugural OPEN LABORATORY Winter Sculpture Exhibition in 2017, which featured Michaelis almunus including Zyma Amien and Xhanti Zwelendaba, NIROX has invited universities across the country to each appoint a curator to develop their own take on Good Neighbours, as well as private and public institutions in neighbouring states to submit contributions that examine the subject from their perspective. Jade Nair curated the Michaelis School of Fine Art's submission entitled 'Broken Promises' that asked artists to interrogate South Africa's relationships with our neighbouring countries and immigrant neighbours, and the ongoing xenophobia often present in those relationships.
Good Neighbours features work by Thero Makepe and Kamyar Bineshtarigh, both of whom received production grants from The Claire and Edoardo Villa Will Trust.
