Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng will be appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor with effect from 1 July 2016. She will be taking over the portfolio of Research and Internationalisation from Professor Danie Visser, who will be retiring at the end of 2016. This will allow a six-month handover period.

Professor Phakeng is currently the Vice-Principal for Research and Innovation at the University of South Africa (Unisa).

Humanities staff and students will remember that Prof Phakeng was one of 3 guest panelists who participated in the first Faculty panel discussion on transformation held in October 2014. The event was part of the annual discussion series themed 'The University and Society' and was hosted in partnership with the Suday Times.
