Over 200 Students Honoured at Faculty of Humanities Student Excellence Awards
The Faculty of Humanities celebrated the exceptional achievements of over 200 students at the annual Student Excellence Awards on 22 October 2025, hosted by the Umthombo Centre for Student Success. The ceremony recognised students who have shown remarkable academic performance, resilience, and dedication to their studies.
Dean of the Faculty, Prof Shose Kessi, closed the evening with inspiring remarks, applauding the discipline, curiosity, and creativity of the Faculty’s top performers. “This recognition is not only a reflection of your academic performance but of your courage to keep learning and growing,” Prof Kessi said.
The evening featured presentations from Aya Mbandlase, who set a celebratory tone with her energetic remarks; Amanda Bessick and Lorraine Valentine, who offered insights on postgraduate opportunities and funding; and Yonela Toshé-Mlambo, whose journey from an extended degree student to a PhD candidate and Sociology tutor highlighted that excellence is achieved through persistence and passion.
Prof Kessi encouraged students to continue striving for impact beyond UCT: “As you continue your studies and ventures beyond the university, remember that the Humanities are not just about knowledge, they are about connection, understanding, and making a meaningful difference in the world.”
The formal programme concluded with light refreshments, entertainment, and group photos, giving students, staff, and colleagues the chance to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of the Faculty’s Dean’s Merit List students.
Congratulations to all awardees, you make the Faculty of Humanities proud!
