Three UCT Humanities Scholars Inducted into the Academy of Science of South Africa
The Faculty of Humanities proudly celebrates the induction of three of its distinguished academics, Professor Imraan Coovadia, Professor Adam Haupt, and Professor Ursula Hoadley, into the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf).
Their election marks a significant recognition of their scholarly excellence and contributions to advancing knowledge, creativity, and critical inquiry within and beyond the University of Cape Town (UCT).
Professor Imraan Coovadia, Director of the Centre for Creative Writing, is an acclaimed author and scholar whose work has enriched South African literature and shaped contemporary conversations on identity, politics, and art.
Professor Adam Haupt, Head of the Centre for Film and Media Studies, is widely recognised for his research on media, music, and cultural politics in post-apartheid South Africa, advancing critical thought on race, resistance, and representation.
Professor Ursula Hoadley, Professor in Curriculum Studies in the School of Education, is a leading authority on curriculum theory and education policy whose research continues to influence national and global debates on equity and quality in schooling.
Their induction took place at ASSAf’s Annual Awards Ceremony on 30 October 2025, where forty-five outstanding scholars from across South Africa were welcomed into the Academy.
ASSAf, the country’s official academy of science, honours individuals who have made exceptional contributions to research and scholarship in their fields. Membership of the Academy represents one of the highest accolades a South African academic can receive, acknowledging both research excellence and commitment to public service.
The Faculty congratulates Professors Coovadia, Haupt, and Hoadley on this remarkable achievement, a testament to the strength and depth of scholarship within the Humanities.
