New additions to the Under Cover of Darkness project team
The Centre for Curating the Archive's Nina Liebenberg and Jade Nair have joined the Under Cover of Darkness curatorial team. They are working alongside curator, Dr Carine Zaayman, and exhibition producer, Josie Grindrod, to extend the scope of the project.
Under Cover of Darkness is a project concerned with the history of women in servitude, especially slavery, in Cape Town. The project was realized, first, as an exhibition at the Iziko Slave Lodge, which drew on the collections of the Iziko Social History Centre. The exhibition is not considered to be a static instantiation. Instead, the space is conceived to function as a prompt for continuing engagement with this history and continues to be used as a venue to stage panel discussions, meetings and performances. As such, the project will host a symposium, curated by Carine Zaayman, Jade Nair and Nina Liebenberg, in March 2021. This event will consider the lives of the twelve women slaves highlighted by the Under Cover of Darkness exhibition as a foreshadowing of the relationship between women of colour and labour in the Cape, from colonialism to the contemporary.
