On Friday 3 June, the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the people of Khayelitsha and Cape Town generally are celebrating 10 years of ARV treatment in Khayelitsha. (The celebration ceremony is at Mew Way hall in Site C, starting at 12 noon). The CSSR - and especially the Aids and Society Research Unit - has worked closely with TAC and MSF since 2001. CSSR fieldworker Thobani Ncapai was part of the first cohort of people to take ARVs ten years ago. At that time he weighed only 21 kg and thought he was about to die. Today, ten years later, the principal impediment to Thobani working is a broken leg, caused in a motor accident. Thobani is currently working on projects around the economic and social consequences of home ownership, and experiences of everyday violence. The CSSR salutes TAC, MSF, Thobani and other veterans of ARVs in Khayelitsha.
