Controversy in SA J of Science
In May, the South African Journal of Science published a 2-page commentary by Nicoli Nattrass on subject and career choice among UCT students. Nicoli is a Professor in the School of Economics, co-director of the Institute for Communities and Wildlife in Africa (iCWild) and a researcher in (and the first director of) the CSSR. The commentary provoked considerable controversy. The SA Journal of Science has now published a special online issue comprising the original commentary, a set of critical responses and Nicoli’s rejoinder. It is to be hoped that, in the words of the SAJS itself, the debate 'will perform an important educational function in universities and in the broader society'.
