Lunchtime online seminar: Azola Siboda, Cebokazi Ngcakani-Mtati and Joanie Mitchell

The Centre for Social Sciences Research (CSSR) and the Institute for Democracy, Citizenship and Public Policy in Africa (IDCPPA) at the University of Cape Town invite you to join us for a lunchtime seminar on 18 February 2025 at 12:45pm. The seminar will be presented by Azola Siboda, Cebokazi Ngcakani-Mtati, and Joanie Mitchell.
About the Seminar:
The role of young people in public mental health: The Youth Development Team (YDT).
The presentation will cover the important role of young people in public mental health and how this resulted in the formation of the YDT, a team comprising of youth (aged 13-19) from around Cape Town, at the Centre for Public Mental Health (CPMH). The talk will also cover the following related to the YDT: recruitment, the role of the team in projects at the CPMH, format of engagement, promoting group ownership, challenges, and successes.
Speakers
Azola Siboda is a dedicated mental health professional with a Diploma in Sport Management and a PGDip in Public Mental Health. He serves as a Youth Liaison at the Alan Flisher Center for Public Mental Health at UCT and as a MERL Officer at Waves for Change, where he combines research, facilitation, and program management to support youth development.
Cebokazi Ngcakani-Mtati is a Clinical Psychologist and a Sue Struengmann Initiative research fellow at the Alan J. Flisher Centre for Public Mental Health at the University of Cape Town's Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health. Her PhD research focuses on developing and co-adapting a contextually appropriate PTSD intervention for adolescents in SA.
Joanie Mitchell is a Clinical Psychologist, and a Sue Struengmann funded PhD Fellow. She is based at the Alan J. Flisher Centre for Public Mental Health, which is part of the Psychiatry and Mental Health Department at the University of Cape Town. Joanie's PhD work will be focused on investigating and addressing symptoms of depression and anxiety among university students.
