About the Seminar:

Exploring the Perceptions of Parenting Stress and Mental Healthcare-Seeking Beliefs among Muslim Millennial Parents in Cape Town

Poor parental mental health and parenting stress are found to increase adverse mental health outcomes for parents and their children. Situational factors related to parenting stress, such as social support, marital relationship, and socio-economic status, have been extensively studied. However, less is known about cultural factors related to parenting stress, and the intersect of Muslim Millennial parents provide a unique insight into experiences of an underrepresented cohort of parents in South Africa. Utilising a phenomenological approach, this qualitative study explored Muslim Millennial parents' perceptions and experiences of parenting stress, and simultaneously explored the participants' mental healthcare-seeking beliefs.

Through snowball and convenience sampling, 10 Muslim Millennial parents (nine mothers and one father) - currently living in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, with at least one child living in their care - were invited to participate in individual, semi-structured interviews. Thereafter, thematic analysis was applied to delineate the qualitative data to produce an accurate discussion of the findings. Additionally, the Health Belief Model was adopted as a framework to further illuminate findings in the discussion. Findings, limitations and subsequent recommendations will be illustrated during the seminar.
