“Research in Residence”, the UCT English Postgraduate Conference, took place on Thursday 24 October. Six postgraduate students presented on their research, and were given feedback by staff members and fellow students. They are to be commended on the wonderful diversity and complexity of their presentations. We look forward to next year’s conference.

The presentations were:

Alex Hoffman: ‘The Language of Love and Desire: Convention, Intimacy and Affect in the Contemporary Romance’

Trish Coetzee: ‘“Do not forget the women”: Hybrid Tragedy and Women in Peter Abrahams’ A Wreath for Udomo (1956)’

Catherine Rudolph: ‘Occupying the (Inner) Borderlands: An exploration of libidinal bodies, abjection and transcendence’

Alice Sholto-Douglas: ‘“Brightly Colored Magic and Weird Worlds”: Sylvia Plath’s Creation of Personae Through Her Visual Poetics’

Maria Geustyn: ‘Olive Schreiner’s Oceanic Imaginary’

Mia McCarthy: ‘Human Nature, or Light in Dark Places: Romanticism and Natural History’
