African Social Psychology meeting
Several members of the department joined a small group meeting in December 2008, to explore the possibility of launching an African Social Psychology society, or association. Don Foster, Colin Tredoux and visiting scholar TendayiViki met with psychologists from other parts of Southern Africa, at theMontfleur conference centre in Stellenbosch, from 10 to 12 December. The conference was organized by Kitty Dumont of University of Fort Hare, and Colin Tredoux of UCT.
The proposed name of the association is ASPA (African Social Psychology Association). Its long range goal is to promote social psychological research and research organization, in Africa. Specific activities and projects such as summer/winter schools, courses, journals, and conference meetings were proposed, and are under discussion. The working group hopes to convene a symposium at the 2009 PsySSA conference in Cape Town to continue the work.
