In his will, Cecil John Rhodes left a large sum of money in a scholarship trust. Originally these scholarships were only open to white males who met the following criteria:

1. Literary and scholastic attainments;

2. Energy to use one's talents to the fullest, as exemplified by a fondness for and success in sports;

3. Truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship;

4. Moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one's fellow beings.

The 83 Rhodes Scholarships that are awarded annually are still awarded based on these criteria, however applications are now open to all graduates regardless of gender or race. 

 

In line with Rhode's original will, each of the 83 Scholarships are available only to specific people resident in certain areas - mainly former British colonies, as well as Germany and the United States. Rhodes allocated four scholarships to be awarded annually to a former pupil of four boys' schools in South Africa (viz. Diocesan College, SACS, Paul Roos, & St. Andrew's Grahamstown). In the last 5 years these scholarships have been opened to female applicants. Sarah is the first female to be awarded the SACS scholarship. 

 

Sarah will begin her studies at Oxford in October next year. She intends to register for a graduate degree with the Department of Education, specialising in Higher Education teaching and administration. She hopes, eventually, to return to South Africa and work towards ensuring that the Higher Education institutions in South Africa continue to meet the changing needs of society.  

 

Sarah is very grateful to the UCT Psychology Department for providing a stimulating learning environment for her over the past five years. The research skills she has been taught by various members of staff will undoubtedly stand her in good stead for further study in the Social Sciences.
