Object Ecologies Exhibition Now Open!
Object Ecologies, an exhibition by the Centre of Curating the Archive, opened at the Iziko South African Museum on Saturday the 3rd of November. The event was well attended with the University of Cape Town's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, giving an inspiring opening speech.
The exhibition consisted of four sub-exhibitions. These included: Freighted by Professor Fritha Langerman; Chest by Nina Liebenberg; Vanquished by Professor Pippa Skotnes; and the fourth Object Ecologies, from which the exhibition gets its name, by the Honours in Curatorship class.
The honours students got to chose a museum object from Iziko's collection and curate it in a travelling exhibition cabinet within the parameters of strict conservation and public safety rules. The course has largely focussed on object studies for 2018 with each student doing a research project and/or exhibition on an object. We will be launching a website based on the objects they chose from Iziko 's archives so check our homepage for updates.
The exhibition will run until March 2019.
Special thanks to Thomas Cartwright, Lyndall Cain, Fazlin van der Schaff, Jade Nair and Nicholas Nomumu Simane.
