This image of Hector Pieterson is carried by a fellow student, Myubiso Makhuba and flanked by his sister, Antoinette Sithole became one of the most iconic images during the uprisings of June 1976 in Soweto and the struggle against Apartheid. This is part of an exhibition called 1976/360 which will show at the Centre for African Studies Gallery to commemorate forty years after the Soweto uprisings.

Gugulethu, 1976. Cape Town. The 1976 Soweto riots (uprising reaches Cape Town). The police have shot this man and are dragging him away from the mob some 100 or so yards out of frame. The idea being not to let "the enemy" have the wounded or the dead so as to make capital out of the situation. A certain newspaper would not publish this picture. I lied to the news editor and said that "the police were rescuing the man from the crowd" and the picture was used. The only complaint from Pretoria regards the picture usage was the cigarette in the mouth of the policeman dragging the unfortunate man.
