Biography

Dr Jamie M. Lachman is the Lead Principal Investigator of the Global Parenting Initiative and an Honorary Associate Professor for the Safety and Violence Initiative at the Centre for Social Science Research. He is also the Director of Research and a Senior Research and Teaching Fellow at the University of Oxford Department of Social Policy and Intervention.

Dr. Lachman has over 20 years of experience developing, testing, and scaling up family and parenting programmes to reduce violence against children and improve child well-being. Their experience has brought them to over 25 countries around the world, promoting healthy parenting practices. Dr. Lachman is a co-founder, steering committee member, and master trainer of the World Health Organisation and UNICEF-led initiative called Parenting for Lifelong Health. The PLH digital and in-person programmes and resources that Jamie has co-developed have reached over 210 million beneficiaries in 198 countries and territories. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-led an international, multi-agency response that provided open-source and freely available evidence-based parenting resources to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on violence against children and poor child well-being.

He holds a DPhil in Social Intervention from the University of Oxford, along with degrees from the University of Oxford (MSc with distinction), Yale University (BA with distinction), and the Dell’Arte International School for Physical Theatre.

He is also a storyteller, banjo player, songwriter, facilitator, and clown. He founded and was formerly an executive director of Clowns Without Borders South Africa, a humanitarian arts-based intervention that provides psychosocial support to vulnerable children and families through humour and play. Dedicated to promoting our human capacity for peace and laughter, Jamie strives to live each day fully with compassion and amazement.
