The Current Crisis at UCT

 

Readers of the APC Gazette are probably aware of the unfolding events at UCT, precipitated by student protests and initially focused on the statue of Rhodes. The matters involved go to the heart of many of the questions with which the APC concerns itself.  Indeed, as things develop, the kinds of questions with which we wrestle in our seminars and in our research are wrestled with in the university. These events are demanding of all of us the utmost sensitivity and care. Public pronouncements and prescriptions at this time seem especially inappropriate. We hold off making any interventions in this Gazette but mark out for ourselves the immense significance of current events, the multiple aspects of the transformation imperative, and the importance of ongoing thought, listening and reflection.
