Archival activism and the planned Constitution Hill museum and archive

In March 2018, the NRF Research Chair in Archive and Public Culture, Carolyn Hamilton, participated in a panel on “Shaping Activism and Identity in Museums and Archives in South Africa”. The panel was part of a conference “Towards the making of the Museum and Archive of the Constitution at the Hill”, organized by the Constitution Hill Trust and the Albie Sachs.

Constitutionalism and Rule of Law Trust. Other panellist included APC research associate, Verne Harris, discussing the archive as a space for dialogue, Noor Nieftagodien on political activism in the archive and Tembeka Ngcukaitobi on the forgotten origins of constitutionalism and its meaning.

Discussion at the conference placed a heavy emphasis on the links between the exertion of active citizenship and the mobilisation of archive, two concerns that chime closely with the APC’s soon to be released report of Archival Activism.

The event included a public lecture by Dr. Lonnie Bunch from the National Museum of African American History and Culture on the making and impact of the new museum. See SABC Digital News.
