Zaayman and the Worlding of Public Cultures.

In July 2020, APC research associate Dr. Carine Zaayman was selected for a coveted postdoctoral position in the transnational project “Worlding Public Cultures: Museums in an Age of Decolonization”. The project brings together universities and museums across the Atlantic, including the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), the Tate Modern (London), the National Museum of World Cultures (Amsterdam), and the Institute for Cultural Inquiry (Berlin). Carine will be part of the team of the Netherlands-based subproject, hosted between the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam (VU), and the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

An artist, curator and scholar committed to critical engagement with colonial archives and collections, specifically those holding strands of Khoekhoe pasts, Carine was awarded a PhD in Fine Art from UCT in 2019 for a thesis supervised by Professors Carolyn Hamilton and Pippa Skotnes, titled Seeing What is Not There: Figuring the Anarchive. During the postdoc, Carine will be continuing and expanding on this research, while working with the Worlding Public team including Wayne Modest, head of the Research Center of Material Culture and professor of Material Culture and Critical Heritage Studies (VU), to produce publications, policy documents and symposia towards fulfilling the project’s social innovation objectives.
