Congratulations to APC’ers Sanele KaNtshingana and Sibusiso Nkomo who have been appointed to serve on the Western Cape Archives Advisory Committee (WCAAC). They join Jo-Anne Duggan, the incoming chair, along with Associate Professor Lance van Sittert and Richard Higgs (University of Cape Town), Nikiwe Momoti (University of the Western Cape), Bongani Mgijima (Stellenbosch University), and heritage activist Mogamat Kamedien to form a dynamic and knowledgeable team with a proven commitment to and passion for archives!
The WCAAC was appointed, through a process of public nomination, by the Western Cape Government Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in accordance with the Provincial Archives and Records Service of the Western Cape Act, 2005 (Act 3 of 2005) to serve for a period of three years.
According to the Call for Nominations, the functions of the WAAC are to:
- promote, complement and support the objects and functions of the Western Cape Archives and Records Service (WCARS)
- advise the Provincial Minister on issues relating to archival and records management matters
- advise and assist the Head of Service in carrying out the objects and functions of the Service and approve the appraisal policy of the Service and monitor its implementation
Members of the WAAC are expected inter alia to: have the knowledge and experience and interest in subjects relating to archives and records management; and to understand the importance of accurate record-keeping to ensure accountable and transparent government.
The WCARS holds extraordinary collections of public and non-public records that reflect the complex history of the Western Cape and its predecessors. While these are consulted by specialist researchers, especially those with an interest in family history, it is my fervent hope that the WCAAC will bring their considerable expertise and energy to bear on making these collections more widely known and used: building partnerships and awareness across all communities and sectors of the Province.
