My affiliation with the Archive and Public Culture Initiative began in late 2015, at which time I was completing a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the University of Cape Town. Prior to this, I had moved from my home in KZN to Grahamstown, where I completed my undergraduate and honours at the university currently known as Rhodes. Moving from the School of Education to the APC, I began an MA on the construction of the history of Mapungubwe, which was completed in February 2018. Following the completion of my MA, I was awarded funding through the Andrew Mellon Foundation and the UCT History Department’s History Access Programme, to read for my PhD. The work revolves around the historical construction of the Xhosa cattle-killing, with a particular interest in how languages interact, and how vernacular concepts come to be used in the production of English Histories of Africa.
