Aspiring Social Workers Take Their Oaths at the 2025 Declaration Ceremony

On 7 April 2025, the Faculty of Humanities hosted the Annual Social Work Declaration Ceremony at Robert Leslie Social 2A Lecture Room. Second-year students gathered to take their professional oaths, marking a pivotal moment in their academic journey and solidifying their commitment to improving the lives of South Africans.
The ceremony, organised by the Department of Social Work & Social Development, is a vital part of the induction process for social work students. It serves not only as a formal academic milestone but also as a deeply personal pledge to uphold the values and principles at the core of the social work profession.
The ceremony was attended by Prof Shose Kessi, dean of Faculty of Humanities, who opened the ceremony with a welcome address, along with departmental staff, who gathered to witness this important moment. In her address, the Dean highlighted the importance of the day. "Today’s ceremony is more than just a formality. It is a symbolic and deeply personal moment of commitment," she explained. "By participating in this declaration, you are making a public and principled pledge to uphold the values that are at the very heart of the social work profession. This includes a commitment to compassion, fairness, confidentiality, respect for the dignity of all people, and, above all, a steadfast dedication to advancing human rights and social justice."
The Dean emphasised that the pledge taken by the students was not only a promise to others but also a promise to themselves. It marks their readiness to embrace a profession that carries immense responsibility and the potential for profound impact. Social workers, particularly in South Africa, play a crucial role in advocating for vulnerable populations and empowering individuals and communities. Building Connections for Impact The event also underscored the importance of connection in social work.
The students were encouraged to build relationships with their peers, lecturers, mentors, and, most importantly, with the communities they will serve. These relationships will be vital in providing the support and resilience needed as they embark on their professional paths.
The university’s commitment to supporting students throughout their education was also emphasised. "From the classroom to the field, we are dedicated to ensuring that you not only acquire knowledge but also develop the ethical framework and practical skills that will shape your careers as social workers," said the Dean.
The ceremony concluded with a moment of gratitude extended to the Department of Social Work & Social Development for hosting the event, as well as to the educators, mentors, and field supervisors who have been instrumental in preparing the students for this pivotal moment.
Their guidance and mentorship will continue to provide vital support as the students move forward in their education and careers. The students, having taken their oaths with pride and purpose, left the ceremony with a renewed sense of commitment.
They now embark on a path that demands empathy, integrity, and an unwavering dedication to serving others with dignity and respect. Their pledge serves as a reminder of the professional code of conduct they will be expected to uphold as they progress in their careers.
