Konstantin Sofianos Scholarship Winner 2022
Well done to our Honours student Alexandra Phillips , for winning the 6th annual Konstantin Sofianos Scholarship her essay “The Game Lodge: Deceptions of South Africa in Gordimer & Ndebele”. It was described by the judges as :
The candidate’s essay thus formidably encapsulates and traces various stages of South African nationalism … through a discussion of the three texts. This is clearly a lot to hold together in a short essay, but the candidate manages to chart these historical shifts admirably well, while demonstrating a particular knack for close reading, with a perceptive discussion of Gordimer’s “South African Childhood” anchoring the piece.
The Konstantin Sofianos Scholarship has been established to provide financial support for exceptional Honours students enrolled in the English Literature Honours programme at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa. A new essay topic will be made available to next year’s students in due course.
Many thanks to Marina, Alkeos and Markus Sofianos & Christine Emmetfor making this funding available to our students.
