Anelia de Waal
Anelia worked as a research assistant to the Archive & Public Culture research initiative as a third year student, majoring in Social Anthropology and Gender Studies at the University of Cape Town, graduating at the end of 2014 with a BSocSci. Anelia undertook a research project on the Marikana Massacre, which specifically looked at how and why people invoke the memory of Marikana. This project drew on ‘graffiti’, which sparked her interest in the topic to begin with, and ‘social activism’, which, at times, seemed to be inseparable from conversations surrounding Marikana. Guiding her on this journey were Prof. Carolyn Hamilton and Dr. Anette Hoffmann.
