SDU brings Life Orientation training to FET Colleges
Revisions of the FET Colleges Fundamental curricula, including Life Orientation has necessitated training of lecturers to ensure implementation of Life Orientation Level 2 in January 2013. The DHET organised a training course for lecturers, with two lecturers from each college invited to attend. Dr Edna Rooth of the Schools Development Unit was responsible for both the revision of the Life Orientation FET NQF levels 2-4 revisions and training of the life skills component. A total of 49 lecturers attended the training, from FET Colleges across all provinces in South Africa, on 1-3 October 2012.
The workshop introduced the revised Life Orientation curriculum Level 2. Lecturers expressed their satisfaction and excitement with the revised curriculum as well as enjoyment and satisfaction with the training course. They particularly liked the idea of the same topics being carried over the three levels, and the progression from the college focus in level 2 to a workplace focus in level 4. Some also liked the idea of integrating Life Skills and ICT more, especially with regard to assessments. Lecturers indicated they were inspired to introduce the revised curriculum and looking forward to trying out the new teaching ideas presented at the course.
