Mentor Seminar 2017
Mentor Seminar 2017
On Saturday 04 February, a Seminar was held for the new After School Homework mentors of 2017. 44 mentors in total attended the seminar: 25 from COSAT and 19 from Usaszo High. The SII’s Health and Community Development Coordinator – Mellisa Francke conducted the seminar with assistance from Usasazo Library assistant, Unathi Zengezi and ex-mentor from COSAT, Lindokuhle Ndamane. The morning consisted of an exploration of what it means to be a mentor to Grade 6 learners from Intshayelelo Primary and Ummanagaliso Primary. The session also explored the use of the Lego Duplo resource that was donated to each primary school in 2016 by the organisation- Care for Education.
The aim for the day was to explore various activities that Grade 6 learners can do using the LEGO Duplo to promote English Language as well as consolidating maths concepts taught in school. One of the highlights of the day was coming up with a new name for the After School Programme: mentors agreed that going forward this programme should be called the “Ukhanyo Programme”, meaning “enlightenment”. This name reflects the Grade 11’s level of inspiration, resulting from engaging with the Lego.
