A/Prof Sonja Loots is a literary scholar in the Department of Afrikaans and Netherlandic Studies at the University of Cape Town. Her research focuses on the meeting of different worlds in precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial texts from Southern Africa and the Netherlands; and in texts emerging from transcultural entanglements in the peripheries of World Literature. She has written about literature influenced by Dutch colonialism at the Cape of Good Hope in the 17th and 18th centuries, by German colonialism in Southwest Africa in the 20th century, and by apartheid in South Africa. She has published two prize-winning novels and co-edited an anthology of Afrikaans short stories. She teaches Dutch and Afrikaans literature and language at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
