Course entry requirements: Acceptance for an honours program.
Course outline: This course covers the necessary academic writing, language, and linguistic building blocks which students need to produce academic texts written in German, in preparation for writing longer research papers. The focus will also be on applied linguistic techniques specific to GFL (for example, discovery-based learning of collocations using German corpora) and could include the theories and practice of translation, depending on staff availability.
DP requirements: 80% attendance of classes, 100% fulfilment of assignments, examinations, orals.
Assessment: Coursework assignments (40%), one compulsory oral examination (20%), one compulsory written examination (40%).

SLL4065FS TOPICS IN GERMAN STUDIES II

Course entry requirements: Acceptance for an honours program.
Course outline: Topics in German Studies II offers an advanced study of selected topics of contemporary German literature, to be determined by staff availability. Topics could include postcolonial approaches with a focus on Africa, as well as gender studies and intercultural approaches to contemporary German literature. This course also includes aspects of literary criticism, and intensified work with scientific texts and the development of more detailed analysis methods. Both oral and written skills are trained.

Course Outline: Topics in German Studies III explores specific concepts and approaches to the subject German as a Foreign Language (GFL), with a focus on engaging with literature in the field of GFL. This course thus offers perspectives on theoretical research and actual concepts of teaching within GFL, with a special focus on literary texts.

Course entry requirements: Acceptance for an honours program.
Course outline: Topics in German Studies IV builds on surveying and analysing key German literary genres and texts. Topics covered may have a historical or contemporary focus, dependent on staff availability and student interest. This module also includes aspects of literary criticism, working with scientific texts, and shall enable the students’ development of more detailed analysis methods in their research. Both oral and written skills are trained.
